SellABand

Bands upload sample music to Sellaband.com, promote the heck out of their profile page and ask fans to chip in $10 per share of a recording that will be produced when the band raises $50,000. The fans can take their money back out at any time before the goal is met. Once recordings are made, 3 songs are offered for free, all other songs are then sold for .50 cents on the Sellaband site, where ad revenue will be split between the bands (1/3), Sellaband (1/3) and Believers (Music Fans)(1/3). Publishing revenue is split between the bands (60%), Sellaband (30%), and the Producers (10%). Fans each get a copy of the recorded CD and bands are free to offer them any other benefits, like concert tickets, that they wish. Sellaband retains rights on the music for 12 months. The company seems confident that bands will be able to find 5,000 supporters (called “Believers”) willing to put up $10 apiece.

Hey! That's my wife in the profile pic you grabbed! :) Mandyleigh Storm was the 7th artist to make the budget (of 16 artists so far), and she recorded in London with Mick Glossop (Van Morrison, Frank Zappa etc) in November 2007. Her album was just released this week, and you can grab the free mp3's from http://www.sellaband.com/shop/artist/mandyleigh/ or buy the actual cd (with lovely booklet and extra tracks etc :) ) from amazon.co.uk amongst others.

The 60% 30% 10% spilt mentioned is for publishing not ad revenue. Ad revenue is split 1/3 believers 1/3 artist 1/3 Sellaband. That 1/3 spilt also goes for sales of the album and digital songs through 3rd party partners such as The Orchard through whom over 400 global download sites will have the songs and albums of those atists reaching 50k and recording with Sellaband. After 12 months the artist gets complete ownership to the mastes (thus if they want to sign with a label they can take their songs with them) and Sellaband only sells the songs for an additional 12 months. I feel that this is a the type of music company that is long in the coming. If you know anything about MP3.com and its original owner's attempt at something similar called New Music Army back in 1999 you will know that the business plan in its basic form is an idea that has been around for most of an decade.

This is finally the possebilety to choose your music and support it. I've been around this site for almost a year and found out it's a great way of beeing busy with music and musicians. My motto as "believer" is: Your music, My choise, Our recordcompany

This is a fantastic adventure, and only the very beginning. With now 7 artists who reached the $50,000, they are proving that this concept works. As a proof, they changed their baseline from : "your music, your choice" to "You are the Record Company". Ergonomy and listening to music is perfect. The search options permit to access all types of music and by dates, country, parts, etc... Maintaining his/her own Believer (the name of the members) page is as funny as easy. And so much more crazy and imaginative things. Have a look by yourself. Great Work and the future of Music. We Are All Believers...
