Wikia provides both wiki creation software and wiki-based search services. The site uses the same wiki software application as Wikipedia called MediaWiki. Wikia is heavily promoting open-source search with their new wiki-based search project. They recently acquired Grub a web crawler and plan to open the code so users can edit and fine tune its results.
Jimmy Wales the founder of Wikipedia founded Wikia. Wikia is independent of Wikipedia and uses a for-profit model with ad revenues. Its main competitors include Wetpaint, pbwiki, and Socialtext.

Wikia’s Scratchpad Wiki Labs is for users with narrow topics that aren’t yet popular with a large community of editors. It’s pretty much an area for people to test and build mini-wikis so they can grow-up and move over to Wikia’s full wikis.
Scratchpad keeps its own mini-wiki database separate from Wikia’s full-wiki database. This allows users to search only the mini-wiki database.

Wikia allows users to create their own wikis. However, the site wants all new wikis to have broad topic scopes and be able to attract large communities of editors. Wikia enforces this policy by having a submission process that weeds out wikis with too narrow topics.
If your new wiki topic is too narrow, you can instead add your topic as a subsection under an existing wiki or create a mini-wiki in the Scratchpad Wiki Lab.

Search Wikia is being built into an open platform search service that gives developers access for editing and adding to the search code. Wikia will also freely distribute its recently acquired Grub web crawling engine so users can provide their computing processes for indexing of the Internet.
