ELN, which is short for EnglishLab.Net, is a semi-closed e-learning social network for those who want to practise English in real time 1-2-1 or in small groups with or without a tutor in virtual classrooms equipped with professionally designed study aids.
"Real time" means that people actually get to TALK (skype for voice), and
"virtual classrooms" are real virtual rooms where learners are expected to log in during classes to be able to see visual aids and feedback.
The ELN is described in a short GoogleDocs slide show - https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1xJBoB2Mj9a4Ux7gPAnVcBusSBSQO2hfwPzQGhZ6KBgc/edit?usp=sharing
Quintessentially, ELN was created over the course of a few years by a teacher for her e-students together with the students as part of Master's degree studies at Manchester University. The purpose was to create something that WORKED and that would make both the teacher and the students happy.
IN SUMMARY, the ELN is a learning process management system AND a learning content management system in one.
OPPORTUNITIES
It has global scalability potential as it can be easily adapted for teaching not only other languages, but virtually any subject to anyone connected to the internet.
SHORT-TERM PLANS
to expand the system to accommodate more teachers
to develop a larger learning object database
to train more teachers to use the ELN
MID-TERM PLANS
to activate the self-access quizware module
to train learner group moderators to encourage ELN users to invite their friends to join the system to practise the language in moderated but tutorless groups using ELN classrooms populated with study-aids
LONGER-TERM PLANS
to expand operations to offer a similar service in other subject areas
