Mehmet Toner is the Helen Andrus Benedict Professor of Bioengineering at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and Harvard-MIT Health Sciences & Technology. He is internationally recognized for his research at the interface of nanotechnology, microsystems engineering, microfluidics, and applications in clinical medicine.
Dr. Toner was born in Istanbul, Turkey. He obtained his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at the Istanbul Technical University, and his master’s degree and doctorate in Mechanical Engineering at MIT. He is the author of more than 300 original scientific and technical publications, and an inventor on more than 30 patents. Dr. Toner is a pioneer in the development of technologies to isolate extremely rare cells from blood, including circulating tumor cells. He is the founding Director of the NIH BioMicroElectroMechanical Systems Center, a nationwide center exploring the applications of microfluidics and nanotechnology in clinical medicine and life sciences. His work in cancer was awarded the Quantum grant from NIH as part of the “moon shot” program. His work has resulted in the formation of multiple companies servicing clinical diagnostics and biotechnology.
