Prior to co-founding The Better Meat Co., Paul Shapiro spent more than a dozen years in a leadership role at The Humane Society of the United States. During that time, he collaborated with animal advocates to defeat Congressional legislation harmful to animals and led local campaigns designed to stop animal cruelty. He also helped spearhead numerous successful campaigns to enact state-level farm animal protection laws.
Shapiro began his career as campaigns director at Compassion Over Killing, a national organization he created while still in high school. Since that early start, he has published hundreds of articles on sustainable protein products and animal protection and has been interviewed by news outlets such as CNN and StarTalk Radio with Neil deGrasse Tyson. He is also a four-time TEDx speaker whose presentations include "Clean Meat: The Clean Energy of Food," "Are We Doing More to Protect Aliens than Life on Earth?" and "What Will Future Generations Think About Our Treatment of Animals?"
A graduate of The George Washington University, Paul Shapiro holds a bachelor's degree in peace studies and conflict resolution. Alongside his work at The Better Meat Co., he hosts the Business for Good Podcast. He lives in Sacramento, California, with his wife, Toni Okamoto, founder of Plant-Based on a Budget, and their dog, Eddie.
