Dr. Shaw is president of Aretê Corporation, a venture capital management firm. He served as the manager of the Micro-Generation Technology Fund, a venture capital fund investing in small-scale alternative energy systems, from its inception in 1997 to completion at the end of 2008. From mid-2007 until his retirement at the end of 2009, Dr. Shaw
managed SC Green Tech Ventures for Sumitomo Corporation. He continues to invest as an angel investor in a portfolio of alternative energy companies. Beginning his venture career in 1983, Dr. Shaw was founder and president of Aretê Ventures, Inc., and served as the managing partner of the five Utech Funds from their inception to completion in 1997. These venture funds were the first to focus on energy-related technologies.
Dr. Shaw has also served on the investment committees of Zurich-based Emerald Technology Ventures, and Commons Capital, as special limited partner of Nth Power Technologies and of Atrium Capital/Honda Ventures, and as an advisor to Earthrise Capital.
Prior to forming Aretê, he was a senior vice president and a member of the board of directors of the management consulting firm, Booz, Allen & Hamilton, where he was a founder of the firm’s energy division.
Earlier in his career, he conducted solid state physics research at Bell Laboratories and at the Cavendish Laboratory in the U.K., where he was an AFOSR postdoctoral fellow. During this period he published 15 refereed papers in Physical Review B and the Journal of Physics C.
Dr. Shaw served as chairman and a director of Distributed Energy Systems Corp./ Proton Energy Systems from its inception in 1996 to 2007, and as chairman and director of Evergreen Solar, Inc. from its inception in 1994 through 2005.
He has served on numerous other corporate boards during his venture capital career, most recently as a director of H2Gen Innovations, Inc., and as a formal observer on the boards of Bandgap Engineering, ACAL Energy, Angstrom Power, and ActaCell.
He has a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University, an MPA from American University and MS and BEP degrees from Cornell University.
