Steve’s business philosophy combines his two great passions: generating high returns for investors and bringing together exceptional teams of people to create something truly remarkable and enduring.
Steve believes that his professional work is not merely about building a bank account or even a career; he’s building a life that fully integrates
personal and professional pursuits into a single framework of meaning and purpose.
With his partner from SGC, Steve co-founded Abora Capital and Abora Insurance Group, acquiring over 15 insurance agencies and books of business, consolidating them into a unified company culture that achieved peak performance. For every $10 million in capital deployed, the company realized a recurring annual EBITDA of $1.8 million (audited by PWC), ultimately achieving an annual internal rate of return (IRR) of 51%. Abora was named the best insurance agency in the markets it served and maintained the highest levels of employee satisfaction. Prior to Abora, Steve was a Partner at SGC, a boutique investment firm where he first learned the art of investing in Insurance Distribution and Payment Services. SGC recycled over $150 million in capital, with an average annual IRR of 54% in the Payment Services Industry and 47% in the Insurance Industry, and maintained a loan default rate of less than 1%. Prior to that, Steve grew his first company (a regional telecom) into the fourth largest fiber-to-the-home provider in the country—the first to deliver telephone, TV, and internet over a single IP connection to the home (2003). By locating support staff and facilities deep in the neighborhood, the company’s customer satisfaction ratings topped 88% which distinguished the company as a leader in its industry.
Steve began his career raising seed capital for Bernard Daines, one of the early pioneers in fiber-optic networking who had sold his previous two companies for over $300 million each to Cisco and Alcatel. Raising seed capital for a visionary like that served as the inspiration for Steve to launch his own fiber-optic networking company.
Steve was an ACG Dealmaker of the Year Finalist and was named to Utah’s List of 40 Under 40 Entrepreneurs. Steve played football in college and earned Academic All-Conference distinction and the Scholar-Athlete Award. Steve enjoys working on physics—his passion project. “Anum” (Anum Ventures) is short for “Astra Numerans,” which means “Counting the Stars,” capturing Steve’s sense of gratitude and optimism while also conveying his love for astrophysics.
