Blue Owl (NYSE: OWL) is an asset manager that is redefining alternatives®. Headquartered in New York City, the firm is one of the largest publicly traded alternative asset managers in the United States. Anchored by a strong permanent capital base, Blue Owl provides businesses with private capital solutions to drive long-term growth and offers
institutional investors, individual investors, and insurance companies differentiated alternative investment opportunities that aim to deliver strong performance, risk-adjusted returns, and capital preservation.
The firm was built from three predecessor businesses. Owl Rock Capital, founded in 2016 by Doug Ostrover, Marc Lipschultz, and Craig Packer, established itself as a major direct lender to primarily private equity-backed, upper-middle-market companies. Dyal Capital Partners, which Michael Rees founded in 2010 while at Neuberger Berman, helped to pioneer the practice of acquiring minority equity stakes in private equity firms, GP stakes. These two businesses merged and went public in May 2021 to create Blue Owl Capital. Within months, the firm added a third pillar by acquiring Oak Street Real Estate Capital, a net lease specialist with operations dating to 2009.
Credit, Blue Owl Capital's largest investment platform, functions as a financing partner to private companies through two primary channels. Direct lending focuses on senior secured loans to primarily upper-middle-market companies, both private equity-sponsored and non-sponsored. The team has closed hundreds of deals working alongside over 150 unique private equity sponsors. Alternative credit, the second largest strategy, focuses on asset-based finance, credit-oriented investments to create diversified pools of financial and hard assets via public and private markets. The alternative credit strategy earned the title of Specialty Finance Lender of the Year, Americas in three of the past four years (2021, 2023, 2024).
Real Assets manages investments across net lease, real estate credit, and digital infrastructure. The net lease strategy owns thousands of equity assets across hundreds of tenant relationships, representing one of the largest such portfolios in the United States and a platform built to provide long-duration, recurring income to investors across market cycles. Blue Owl's digital infrastructure strategy has become the largest pure-play strategy of its kind in North America.
GP Strategic Capital provides long-term minority equity and financing to established alternative asset managers. Having completed over 100 transactions across more than 70 partnerships since inception, the platform has captured 87 percent of all GP minority stakes deals of $600 million or larger—a concentration of market position that gives it enough scale to write individual checks above $1 billion. A value creation team assists partner firms with fundraising, growth planning, and operational improvements. The platform also includes a first-of-its-kind partnership with the NBA: Blue Owl's HomeCourt Partners fund is the only institutional investor approved to acquire minority equity stakes in an unlimited number of NBA franchises, currently holding positions in the Sacramento Kings and Atlanta Hawks.
Blue Owl's leadership team includes Co-CEOs Doug Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz, Co-Presidents Craig Packer (who heads Credit), Marc Zahr (who heads Real Assets) and Michael Rees (who heads GP Strategic Capital), CFO Alan Kirshenbaum, COO Andrew Polland and Chief Legal Officer Neena Reddy. The firm employs professionals across over 20 offices worldwide and holds a BBB+ credit rating from Fitch.
