Central Romana Corporation is an agro-industrial, tourism corporation and the largest sugar producer in the Dominican Republic. Founded in 1912, Central Romana has developed innovative sugarcane types that can adapt to low fertility calcareous soil as well as prolonged drought conditions, and are pest-resistant. The company has developed and
patented over 15 new types of sugarcane for commercial use, as well as for use by other sugar mills in the region.
Central Romana played a key role in promoting tourism through creating a duty-free zone and developing hotel resorts. Over the past century, Central Romana has also diversified into chemicals, free zones, livestock, meat and dairy production, construction materials, iron, airport and port operations, real estate and hotels. The company has also implemented social programs in health, education, housing and food in the Dominican Republic.
