Eastern Illinois University is one of many public postsecondary institutions in Illinois, but that certainly doesn’t mean that it’s ordinary. In its academics, student life, and overall philosophy, EIU takes a unique and progressive approach to the traditional university experience.
Eastern Illinois is committed to Integrative Learning, which is
the concept that education is more than reading books and sitting in class. EIU thinks of learning as an all-encompassing process, and attempts to give its students a strong understand not just of academics, but also of the world around them.
At EIU, you’ll not only take classes, but also engage in the world. There are a number of experiential opportunities to choose from as part of EIU’s academics and student life, whether it’s community service, internships, study abroad programs, or field research. These opportunities are designed to help you grow both personally and academically.
The school is also noted for its research and creative activity, which contribute to the Integrated Learning philosophy. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is dedicated to providing resources and funding to student projects. These projects vary in subject and scope; some recent examples include developing renewable energy, recycling, evaluating mass media messages, and curating museum exhibits.
