Founded by Rev. Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani nearly 50 years ago and under the leadership of Co-Executive Directors Rita Shimmin and Kristen Growney Yamamoto, GLIDE offers comprehensive support services to San Francisco’s poor, homeless, and working poor communities to overcome the barriers of poverty, violence, addiction, dependency and
low self-worth.
GLIDE respects the dignity of each and every individual in our community, particularly during times of hardship. No matter how many times a person falls, she or he is always welcome at GLIDE and given another chance at recovering, rehabilitating, moving toward self-sufficiency and developing personally and spiritually.
GLIDE’s social services were launched in 1969 when a handful of volunteers began serving a Monday night meal to street people. Since then, GLIDE has become one of San Francisco’s largest and most comprehensive providers of innovative programs and services for the poor and marginalized.
