College athletes were historically restricted from earning money based on their brand, a rule that limited their ability to benefit from their popularity and athletic success. This landscape underwent significant changes following mounting pressure to address market inequalities, multiple legal challenges, and increased advocacy for student rights.
In 2021, the NCAA revised its longstanding policy, granting student-athletes the right to profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). The shift continued in 2025, when the NCAA made further changes, including allowing prospective student-athletes to negotiate NIL deals even before enrolling in college.
Amid these regulatory changes, 2020 saw the creation of YOKE by two college athletes and a passionate sports fan. They anticipated the coming transformation and built the technology underpinning the NIL Club ecosystem. Their vision centered on enabling athletes to benefit directly from NIL through their fan base, allowing for personal engagement and financial support. The result was the NIL Club app, developed after extensive collaboration with hundreds of thousands of student-athletes, aimed at bridging the gap between athletes and their supporters while providing a sustainable way to monetize personal brands.
NIL Club is designed as a secure, compliant platform that empowers both college and high school student-athletes to connect with fans and generate recurring income. It emphasizes transparency, student well-being, and fair distribution of proceeds, making it a respected option at multiple educational levels. As of now, NIL Club supports over 20,000 teams and groups, with more than 250,000 students having earned over $16 million through the platform.
The process is straightforward: fans can subscribe to a NIL Club associated with their favorite team or group. This subscription offers them exclusive, year-round access to unique content from athletes, while directly supporting these athletes through a monthly fee. The subscription can be cancelled at any time. The technology behind NIL Club, developed by YOKE, enables athletes to earn extra income without compromising their academic or athletic commitments, and ensures the system is optimized for team-wide benefits rather than individual stardom.
Athletes can join existing NIL Clubs or start their own, regardless of sport, activity, or school. Payments are managed transparently, with revenue from subscriptions pooled and distributed evenly among all participating athletes in a club. This approach rewards team engagement and ensures fairness. Athletes themselves help manage their club rosters, and the system enables accountability and transparency.
Fans receive authentic, behind-the-scenes content not found on public platforms, including game-day routines, reactions, campus life, hobbies, and personalized messages. The content is intentionally less filtered, fostering a sense of closeness and real investment in athletes’ journeys.
NIL Club also serves high schoolers, rolling out on a state-by-state basis with careful legal oversight. Parents and guardians are actively involved, particularly for minors, helping with withdrawals and encouraging responsible engagement. The high school version features strict guardrails and is open to students participating in various extracurricular activities, encouraging early financial literacy.
Since June 2025, brands have also begun collaborating with NIL Club athletes for marketing campaigns, opening further opportunities. Major brands like LoveShackFancy and SoFi have partnered with NIL Club to reach college athletes, illustrating the growing potential of the NIL economy.
