Converting plant medicines into Rx oncology drugs by molecular enhancement Our Mission We are dedicated to creating breakthrough cancer medicines by using historical knowledge of nature-derived anti-cancer compounds and converting them into efficacious and safe oncology treatments (Rx drugs, not nutraceuticals) with minimal harmful impact on the
health or/and quality of life, unlike radiation and chemotherapy.
To achieve this goal, Phythera is leveraging recent advancements in science such as liposomal drug delivery, small molecule (drug) conjugation, as well as AI-driven small molecule drug designs to improve bioavailability, stability, safety, tissue penetration, affinity to target and more.
Our Vision Many cancers and a number of other complex and multifactorial diseases activate multiple molecular pathways, interacting with each other and enabling disease progression. We envision modulating these using not one drug, but the mixtures of biologically active molecules found together in the extracts of medicinal plants. Until recent these were only available as nutraceuticals due to problems in maintain quality and demonstrating efficacy. We plan to utilize the FDA’s new botanical drug regulatory path for developing the extract of a single type of plant into a prescription cancer drug. This plant extract benefits from a history of human use. This will be augmented by our discovery of a way to further enhance the ability of the extract to kill cancer cells, which will distinguish our product from other botanical cancer drugs.
In addition, Phythera is also pursuing more traditional approaches of seeking new efficacious small molecules in rare anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory botanicals, and modulating their properties to impact untreatable diseases such as cancer and inflammation.
Power of the Drug Cocktail Drug cocktails are widely known as the best way to attack cancers because they attack cancers through different mechanisms. This limits the cancer cell's ability to develop resistance before it dies. HIV was a death sentence before the current three-drug cocktail became the standard of care.
Difficulty of Cocktails Safe and effective drug cocktails are incredibly expensive to design, develop, and test. The FDA's traditional process for testing "combination" drugs requires each component's testing efficacy and safety. But what happens if you have 20 active components?
The Opportunity In 2016, the FDA released its Botanical Drug Development Guidance for Industry. Among other things, the FDA recognized the inability to isolate and test all bioactive components of botanicals. They now allow a botanical to be treated as a single active ingredient. As a bonus, they also consider past human use in the design of their human trials. Our Strategy Phythera Therapeutics, Inc has developed a platform for enhancing botanicals with long histories of safe human use and indication of efficacy. Our patent-pending process has yielded our first prescription drug candidate called MetPhyte(TM) Plus.
