Protego Biopharma is a biotechnology company that develops small-molecule therapeutics that aim to correct diseases caused by protein misfolding. The company uses a discovery platform based on pharmacological chaperones and modulation of the cell’s protein-folding machinery to restore proper protein structure and function. Its lead drug candidate,
PROT-001, targets AL amyloidosis—a serious systemic disease in which misfolded immunoglobulin light chains accumulate in organs. PROT-001 is designed to stabilize those light chains and prevent amyloid deposits, addressing the root cause rather than only managing symptoms.
Beyond AL amyloidosis, Protego explores other protein misfolding disorders, including monogenic diseases that lead to myopathy, cardiomyopathy, kidney disease, retinal disorders, channelopathies, and various degenerative conditions. It combines human genetics data, bioinformatics, deep biology, and clinical pathology to select targets with strong evidence. It also works on identifying sensitive biomarkers to enable early diagnosis and to monitor therapeutic engagement and efficacy during trials.
