With plans to cultivate its medical cannabis in Portugal’s Alentejo region, Symtomax will grow most of its crops outdoors, taking full advantage of the region’s rich, fertile soil and the consistently warm climate.
Outdoor cannabis cultivation uses much less energy when compared to indoor growing, which a recent Bloomberg article estimated accounted for 9% of all household electrical consumption in California. In addition to being significantly more energy efficient, cultivating cannabis outdoors also has much lower associated production costs, at around 60-70% less than cannabis grown indoors.
By locating Symtomax’s cultivation in Portugal, the company is well situated in a country that has a supportive attitude towards the industry, as well as having access to tariff-free distribution in the EU and Portugal’s lower labour costs. Approved by Infarmed, Symtomax has one of the largest cultivation sites in Europe, where it will be able to produce the highest quality medical-grade cannabis that is safe, pure and consistent.
