The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was established in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. As a key agency within the Department of Homeland Security, its mission is to ensure the security of transportation systems across the United States.
In collaboration with state, local, and regional partners, the TSA oversees
the safety of highways, railroads, buses, mass transit systems, ports, and the 450 airports nationwide. With a dedicated workforce of approximately 50,000 employees spanning from Alaska to Puerto Rico, the agency is committed to making journeys—whether by plane, train, car, or ferry—safe and secure.
The TSA’s team consists of security officers, inspectors, directors, air marshals, and managers, all working together to safeguard the nation’s transportation systems. From screening for explosives at airport checkpoints to inspecting rail cars, patrolling subways with law enforcement, and enhancing safety across all modes of travel, the agency is dedicated to protecting the public and their loved ones.
