Alan has been involved in optical fiber sensing, optical instrumentation, and biotech tools development and systems commercialization through start-ups in Connecticut for over 20 years. In 1997, Alan was the founding CTO with CiDRA in Wallingford, CT. In 2003, he became CEO at CyVera Corp, which was a spin-out from CiDRA focused on the development
of an innovative liquid assay for genomic and proteomic analysis using a novel holographically encoded micro-bead technology. Following the acquisition of CyVera by Illumina in 2005, Alan served as Vice President and General Manager with Illumina for their UK group based in Cambridge. Currently, he is also a partner with Cycle Ventures, a CT-based venture capital group.
Alan’s scientific background is in optical instrumentation, optical fiber sensing, and spectroscopy. He is a prolific inventor and holds over 120 US patents.
He has a BS in Physics from the University of Warwick, and a Ph.D. in Optical Spectroscopy and Medical Physics from the University of Leeds, both in the UK.
