Andreas Plückthun studied chemistry at the University of Heidelberg and received his graduate education at the University of California San Diego, where he obtained a Ph.D. in 1982 in the group of Prof. Edward Dennis. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the Chemistry Department of Harvard University (1982-85). From 1985 until 1993, he was group
leader at the Genzetrum and Max-Planck-Institut für Biochemie in Martinsried, Germany. He was appointed to the faculty of the University of Zürich as a Full Professor of Biochemistry in 1993. His pioneering scientific work has made him one of the most highly cited scientists in the antibody field and his work has been honored by a number of international awards. In 1992, he co-founded the Munich biotechnology company MorphoSys, which is listed at the TecDAX and now has over 300 employees. MorphoSys is a leading antibody company with successful deals with all major pharmaceutical companies.
