Charles Benedict Calvert was an American politician who served as a U.S. representative from the sixth district of Maryland from 1861 to 1863. He founded the Maryland Agricultural College, the first agricultural research college in America, known today as the University of Maryland. He was a direct descendant of the Lords Baltimore, proprietary
governors of the Province of Maryland from 1631 until 1776.
For over twenty-five years, Calvert articulated a strong vision of agricultural education throughout the state of Maryland. He was elected as the first Chairman of the Board of Trustees, held the second largest number of subscriptions to charter the college, and chaired a committee to plan the first buildings. He was also an early backer of the inventors of the telegraph.
