Dr. David L. Helfet is annually ranked as Castle-Connolly's "America's Top Doctors” and is currently Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Director of the Orthopedic Trauma Service at both Hospital for Special Surgery and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of
Synthes, as Chairman of AO Clinical Investigation and Documentation for 10 years, and is currently designated as the Orthopedic Trauma specialist for the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), the New York Police Department (NYPD), and New York State Police.
Dr. Helfet is a past President of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has served as an Examiner on the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Helfet has published and lectured extensively on orthopedic trauma and has been the recipient of many honors and awards including the Presidential Guest and Watson-Jones Memorial Lecture of the British Orthopaedic Association and the Philip D. Wilson Jr. Teaching Award. He was most recently inducted in the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars.
Dr. Helfet received a BSc in Biochemistry from University of Cape Town and an M.B.CH.B. He completed his Internship and Surgical Residency at Edendale
Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, S.A. and at Johns Hopkins University, his Orthopaedic Residency at Johns Hopkins University, and his Trauma fellowship at the University of Bern/Insel Hospital, in Bern, Switzerland, and his Sports Medicine Fellowship at UCLA.
