He came from a humanities background to become a physician yet found the limited therapies available to patients a compelling reason to engage in research. Malignancies program at the Massachusetts General Hospital, founded the Center for Regenerative Medicine at MGH, co-founded and co-directs the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and is a founding Chair emeritus and Professor of the Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology at Harvard University. His contributions have been recognized by election to the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American College of Physicians and the Gerald and Darlene Jordan Professorship at Harvard Medical School.
Medical research derives its meaning from medical care and David is committed to helping discoveries become therapies. He co-founded the public companies Fate Therapeutics and Magenta Therapeutics and Clear Creek Bio with that explicit goal. The overarching strategy of Clear Creek Bio is to overcome the differentiation blockade inherent in cancer cells and restore the flow of differentiation, a distinctive approach and the inspiration for its name.
