Denis Cortese, M.D., emeritus president and chief executive officer at the Mayo Clinic, was elected to Cerner Corporation’s Board of Directors in May 2011.
From 2002 through November 2009, he was the president, chief executive officer, and chairman of the board of governors and a member of the board of trustees for the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Cortese
was also chief executive officer of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., from 1999 through 2002, and worked as a physician for the Mayo Clinic from 1976 through 1999.
Since January 2010, he has been a Foundation Professor at Arizona State University (ASU) in the School of Health Management and Policy, W.P. Carey School of Business and the Department of Biomedical Informatics, Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering. He is also the director of ASU’s Health Care Delivery and Policy Program and currently president of the Healthcare Transformation Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.
Dr. Cortese is a board member of the Essence Group, Pinnacle West Capital Corporation and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health System and a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences (U.S.). He was chair of the IOM’s Roundtable on Evidence-Based Medicine from 2006 to 2009 and served as chair of the Roundtable on Value & Science-Driven Health Care from 2009 to 2010. He was also on the board of the Healthcare Leadership Council from 2003 to 2009, serving as board chair for two years.
Dr. Cortese previously served as a member of the Harvard/Kennedy Health Policy Group, the Division of Engineering and Physical Sciences of the National Research Council and RAND Health. He is an honorary member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (Mexico) and the Royal College of Physicians (London).
In 1966, Dr. Cortese earned his bachelor’s degree in biology at Franklin and Marshall College. He completed his medical degree at Temple University Medical School in 1970.
