A 30-year veteran in landline, cellular, and satellite telephony, Mr. Caplan has led substantial programs in network technology, engineering, product development, and network operations. He has held executive positions in firms ranging from Fortune 50 to small startups.
Subsequent to founding DCmobility, Mr. Caplan served as Chief Network
Officer for SkyTerra, LLC, a mobile satellite services provider serving the U.S. and Canada. While there, Mr. Caplan oversaw network technology and operations. Under his leadership, his team developed the technology and spectrum solutions to provide an integrated satellite/terrestrial network and create integrated chipsets and end-user devices. Mr. Caplan partnered with Qualcomm, Alcatel-Lucent, and others to create the new EGAL airlink protocol that allows satellite and terrestrial services to elegantly coexist within the Qualcomm chipset ecosystem.
Prior to SkyTerra, Mr. Caplan served as Vice President of National Network Services at Nextel, responsible for engineering, operations, and technology development. He launched numerous industry-first network services, such as nationwide Push-to-Talk, Locations Services, and Packet Data Services and a large number of new handsets. He also managed Nextel’s telco spend; his overall financial responsibility exceeded $1B annually.
After graduating from Georgetown University with degrees in Economics and Mathematics, Mr. Caplan began his career at MCI, serving in a variety of engineering and operational positions in the core Long Distance division. Late in his tenure, he headed up engineering for MCI’s new startup in the CLEC space, MCImetro, where he launched MCI’s first local services products and services.
