Dr. Eckard Wimmer is a member of the National Academy of Science and Distinguished Professor of Microbiology at Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY. For over 40 years Dr. Wimmer has made seminal contributions to the study of viruses, attested by over 330 research publications. He received his doctorate in organic chemistry from Goettingen
University in his native Germany, but soon discovered his heart was in the then budding field of molecular virology. However, he never lost his regard for the organic nature of life, a view that led him to synthesize the first ever virus outside a living cell, and to produce the first ever chemically synthesized infectious virus genome. Dr. Wimmer is counted among the select few to be designated Highly Cited Researcher by the Institute of Scientific Information. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), of the American Academy of Microbiology, and of the German Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina). Among his numerous honors, Dr. Wimmer is the recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Forschungspreis, two NIH Merit Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Research Foundation of the State of New York, the Beijerinck Virology Price, and the 2012 Robert Koch Medal. Dr. Wimmer earned his BS in Chemistry from the University of Rostock, Germany, a MS in Chemistry from the University of Goettingen, Germany and his Dr. rer. nat. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Goettingen, Germany.
