Elena Medo is the CEO of Leonie Health PBC which she co-founded with Adrianne Weir. Medo is the pioneer of modern milk banking, having spent 30 years developing and commercializing products for use in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. Medo founded Prolacta Bioscience in 1999 and during her tenure as CEO, she raised over $24M in private
investment and venture capital. Leonie Health is a life science company focused on preserving the bioactive immune factors in human milk for use in improving nutritional products for immune compromised patients. By pairing these potent immune factors with maximum patient safety, the Leonie Health Products will revolutionize the way that critically ill patients are nourished.
Medo has raised over $35M for her last three life science startups, using disruptive innovation to achieve the goal of feeding the world’s 15 million preterm infants born each year. She holds numerous patents and her contributions to the space prior to Medolac include the development of the double breast pumping system, the first online milk bank, the first customized formulation of human milk to treat preterm infants and the first midrange IR human milk analyzer.
Her innovative collaboration with Co-founder and daughter, Arianne Weir led to a massive redesign of the milk banking business model, including the founding of the Mother’s Milk Cooperative enabling healthy nursing mothers to transact the sale of surplus milk in a safe and secure environment. The mission of the Company is to make human milk available to all babies in need, regardless of their economic status. Medo has an MBA from the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California, Irvine where she also studied Computer Science and Developmental and Cell Biology as an Undergraduate.
