Gerald R. Fink, Ph.D, a founding member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and American Cancer Society, and Professor of Genetics at MIT, was Director of the Whitehead Institute from 1990-2001. Dr. Fink received his Ph.D. degree in Genetics from Yale University, did postdoctoral research at the National Institute of Health, and then
served for 15 years on the faculty of Cornell University.
He was elected a Member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1981, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1984. In 1988, he was elected President of the Genetics Society of America and in 1996, Dr. Fink was elected a member of the American Academy of Microbiology and the Institute of Medicine. Among his honors and awards are the National Academy of Sciences/U.S. Steel Foundation Award in Molecular Biology, the Medal of the Genetics Society of America, the Hansen Foundation Award for Microbiological Research, the Wilber Lucius Cross Medal from the Yale Graduate School Association, and the Gruber Foundation International Award in Genetics.
