James serves on the boards of directors of Allegheny Technologies Incorporated, ECHO Realty, EQT Corporation and General Electric Company.
Additionally, he is on the board of directors of The Heinz Endowments, is chair of the board of trustees of Carnegie Mellon University and a member of the boards of trustees of the University of Notre Dame
and the Dietrich Foundation, and is a past chair of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. He is also a Board Member Emeritus of the Salvation Army and a Member of the Allegheny Foundation.
James joined PNC in 1972. After serving in various capacities of increasing responsibility and in several leadership roles, he was named chief executive officer in 2000. James oversaw PNC’s expansion into new markets and led PNC to record growth. He retired as chief executive officer in April 2013 with more than 40 years of service with the company and as executive chairman of the board in April 2014.
James earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1970 and a master's degree in business administration from The Ohio State University in 1972.
