Dr. Steinberg is both a practicing physician and holds a health care management degree from Harvard University so he is perfectly positioned to help health systems solve clinical and business challenges. In his last role as Chief
Executive Officer at Weiss Memorial Hospital, he fostered the highest quality outcomes and pioneered clinical innovation.
Steinberg, a urological surgeon, is known for his interest in robotic surgery and health care disparities. On the east coast, where he practiced for years, he provided free prostate cancer screenings and treatment for uninsured men.
Prior to Weiss, this physician leader was at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, CT, serving as senior vice president for health policy and disparity, and chairman and director of surgery since 2006. During his tenure there, Dr. Steinberg recruited 14 new employed surgeons generating $20 million in professional net patient revenue and growing the surgery department to more than 220 active surgeons. He also created a joint replacement institute that performs 2,800 cases a year and is the seventh largest center in the country.
Prior to Saint Francis Hospital, Dr. Steinberg served as chief of surgery at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, MA, which is the flagship hospital of Vanguard Health’s New England Market. While at Saint Vincent’s, he created the first da Vinci Robotic Surgical Program in Central MA. He also led the transition of the general surgery residency affiliation from UMASS Medical School to Beth Israel Hospital/Harvard Medical School. In addition, Dr. Steinberg was at the Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) where he initially served as chief of urology and subsequently acting chief of surgery. While at the CHA, he contributed to the official designation of CHA as a Harvard Medical School teaching affiliate.
Dr. Steinberg earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA, and served his residency in the Harvard Program in Urology at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA. Dr. Steinberg is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and a member of numerous professional societies.
