Jeremy Caldwell, Ph.D., is vice president, Head of RNA Therapeutics, Screening and Protein Sciences for Merck Research Laboratories (MRL). In his current role, he oversees the discovery and development of RNA-based therapeutics including siRNA discovery, RNA delivery and pipeline enabling technologies as well as early lead generation in screening
and protein sciences.
Prior to this role he led the integration of legacy Merck and legacy Schering Plough discovery and preclinical functions as the founding head of Strategic Operations, whose responsibility also included coordinating the broader MRL Integration plans and representing MRL to MMD, GHH, Global Services, Finance, etc. to insure cross divisional alignment.
Prior to this role Dr. Caldwell was Executive Director, Basic Research, and Head, Automated Biotechnology, for MRL overseeing key technology platforms in lead identification, genomics-based target identification, cell biology, protein sciences and automation as well as co-chairing Merck.s Novel Technologies Research and Licensing Committee.
Prior to joining Merck in 2008, Dr. Caldwell was executive director of molecular and cellular biology, lead discovery and genomics at the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF). Additionally, he was chairman and head of GNF Technology and Research.
Dr. Caldwell started his industry career with Rigel, Inc. as a project leader. He has worked as an independent consultant to several biotechnology companies in the areas of proteomics, cell-based drug discovery and preclinical toxicology technologies. Dr. Caldwell co-founded the biopharmaceutical company Kalypsys, Inc.
Dr. Caldwell has been lead inventor on over 17 issued/pending patent applications in molecular biology, drug/gene discovery and medical devices. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 journal articles and three book chapters and has been invited to speak at numerous conferences.
Dr. Caldwell is a member of the Society for Bio-molecular Screening, American Society for Microbiology and the American Association of Cancer Research. He also serves on the editorial boards of Drug Discovery Technologies and ADT.
Dr. Caldwell received a Ph.D. in molecular pharmacology from Stanford University. He holds an undergraduate degree in molecular and cellular biology with an emphasis in neurobiology from the University of California at Berkeley.
