Smith is a professor of Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Washington. He directs the UW+Amazon Science Hub.
He is the founder of Proprio, Wibotic Corp., and Jeeva Wireless (now Waveworks).
Several of his inventions have been commercialized. A smart car seat sensor he co-invented while
a graduate student at MIT was licensed by Honda and has been standard equipment in every Honda car since 2001.
He was an early employee of Escher Group LTD, joining in 1998 before they had any outside investment. Between 1998 and 2003, he held several positions there including Vice President of Escher Labs and Chief Science Officer. The company went public in 2011. The FiberFingerprint authentication technology and SpectralSeal symbology were used by Singapore Post. One of his patents (issued 2013) is used in the company's RiposteTrEx product.
In 2004 he joined Intel, where he rose to the position of Principal Engineer. Intel created an advanced automobile tolling product based on his WISP research, and is commercializing his wireless charging research. He was featured by name in several TV ads in Intel's "Rockstar" ad campaign.
