Dr. Julian Gordon has contributed extensively to the field of protein synthesis, led in the fields of immunology and immunochemistry, and spearheaded new technologies in rapid diagnostics. His group was responsible for the development of the Western Blot at Novartis (then CIBA-GEIGY).
The Western Blot is an important method used today in
molecular biology, biochemistry and immunogenetics for the characterization and detection of proteins. Additionally, he and his group at Abbott Labs were responsible for the development of lateral flow immunoassay technology, which has led to Abbott’s first one-step over the counter pregnancy test.
Julian has enjoyed an extensive career as a research scientist in a variety of well-known international institutions in Copenhagen, Denmark; Uppsala, Sweden; New York City, USA; and Basel, Switzerland. He earned his Ph.D. in the lab of Nobel Laureate Maurice Wilkins at the University of London, Kings College studying the then controversial subject of the molecular weight of DNA.
In the early 1960s, Dr. Gordon did postdoctoral work in Copenhagen and Uppsala. Specifically at Uppsala, he did pioneering work on the addition of methyl groups to the structure of RNA. After post-doctoral work in Europe, Dr. Gordon moved to the lab of Nobel Laureate Fritz Lipman at Rockefeller University in New York and did groundbreaking work on the biochemistry of protein synthesis.
During a 24-year career at Abbott Labs, he honed his skills in intellectual property creation, development, prosecution, business development and licensing.
Julian currently holds a position as Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and is a co-founder of Inspirotec LLC, based in Chicago, IL.
