Laurence J. Marton, MD is a leading expert with extensive experience in the fields of drug development, with a focus on treating human diseases related to cell growth including cancer.
Marton was the Co-Founder, Chief Scientific and Medical Officer, and a Director of SLIL Biomedical Corporation. He later served as the Chief Scientific Officer at
Cellgate, which acquired SLIL Biomedical, and then as the Chief Scientific Officer at Progen Pharmaceuticals Limited, which acquired Cellgate. These companies were or are focused on the discovery and development of novel compounds for the treatment of cancer.
Before moving from academia to industry, Marton served as Dean of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School and previously chaired the Department of Laboratory Medicine at UCSF, where he was a Professor in the Departments of Laboratory Medicine and Neurological Surgery.
In the nonprofit sector, Marton serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Association for Cancer Research Foundation as well as on the Board of Directors of Cancer Commons and of the California Heart Center Foundation. In the for profit sector, he serves on the Board of Directors of TOMA Biosciences and Microsonic Systems, is Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of PharmaJet, and is on the Advisory Boards of Ruga Corp and Silicom Ventures.
Marton’s research has resulted in more than 180 original publications, 60 scientific reviews and chapters, four books, and numerous patents, and his work has been acknowledged internationally.
He received an MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a BA from Yeshiva University.
