Laurence K. Marshall was a founder of Raytheon Company and served as the first chairman of the Raytheon board of directors from 1948-1950. He served as president fr
om 1928-1948.
In 1922, Mr. Marshall, with Vannevar Bush and Charl
es G.Smith, founded the American Appliance Company in
Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company’s name was
changed
to Raytheon in 1925.
As an entrepreneur and trained physicist, Mr. Marsh
all helped to build the company and its reputation for
technological leadership. In 1962, he moved with his wife,Lorna, an anthropologist, to the Kalahari Desert, where they ived for more than 10 years. The Marshalls earned
international distinction for their anthropological
research.
Mr. Marshall was born in 1889 in Massachusetts. He
graduated from Tufts University in 1911 and was a
member of the Tufts Delta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, t
he national engineering honor society. In 1961, he was
awarded an honorary doctor of science degree from T
ufts University. Tufts University also established the
Laurence K. Marshall Scholarship, which makes annua
l awards to superior students with financial need in
the College of Engineering.
Mr. Marshall passed away in November, 1980.
