Marcelo joined Unbabel in January 2017 as VP of Engineering with the main goal of strengthening and scaling the technical team. Marcelo has a Master's Degree in Computer Engineering and Telematics from the University of Aveiro and multiple experiences building software products and scaling technical architectures.
In 2009, during his Master
Thesis, Marcelo became a Researcher for the Advanced Telecommunications and Networking Group from Instituto de Telecomunicações in Aveiro where he published seven papers on international conferences and one journal publication in Elsevier Computer Communications. During this time Marcelo also participated in MEDIEVAL, an FP7 project researching communication mobility in mobile heterogeneous networks.
Marcelo was a Quality Assurance Consultant at leading Portuguese IT consultancy Novabase where he led automation and performance interventions in relevant corporate projects for companies such as Vodafone, Safaricom and the Government of Portugal. Later, as Quality Assurance Engineer and Team leader, Marcelo managed an entire Quality Assurance software pipeline at Inova Software, an international software house, leader in life science partnering CRM.
As an entrepreneur, in 2013 Marcelo launched and co-founded the first mobile application for Speech Therapy in European Portuguese. Since then Marcelo has launched several online projects such as PushMeetup (a real time friend finder) and Betterdeveloper.work (a list of curated jobs for developers) that serve as personal drive in seeking technical improvement. In 2014 Marcelo joined Witliving, a digital integrated marketing and services platform as Software Engineer and Chief Technology Officer where he led a team of software engineers and designers.
Marcelo has been an advisor to startups and a mentor in startup accelerator programmes such as Lisbon Challenge and ProTechting. He was the creator of the first Lisbon CTO Meetup event and has been an active member of the ecosystem. Marcelo is also one of the organisers of ProductTank Lisbon, a software product centric regular event that counts over 600 people.
In 2015 Marcelo joined Faber Ventures as Chief Technology Officer, a venture capital fund with a product team platform. At Faber Ventures Marcelo led a technical team that enabled portfolio companies to unlock potential new markets and use-cases.
Marcelo has been deeply involved in promoting entrepreneurship and technical conferences (software architectures, frameworks and paradigms) for which he is regularly invited to lecture about in institutions such as Universidade de Aveiro, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Coimbra, etc.
