Michael Alan Caplan, M.D., is an inaugural member of LifePoint’s National Physician Advisory Board. Dr. Caplan practices at Piedmont Internal Medicine in Danville, Virginia, where he has served since 1986. He has more than 20 years of teaching and speaking experience and currently is an instructor for the Virginia Commonwealth of Osteopathic
Medicine Residency Program at Danville Regional Medical Center. Dr. Caplan also serves as Medical Director of Gateway Health Alliance and is a member of the Medical Directors Leadership Committee for Sentara Healthcare. He has been a board member for LifePoint’s Danville Regional Medical Center for the past fourteen years and has served in positions at the hospital including Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Chief of Staff and Director of the Intensive Care and Coronary Care Units.
Dr. Caplan earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland in Baltimore and conducted research in immunology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore before earning his medical doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Alabama Birmingham. Dr. Caplan is a member of the American Medical Association, the Association of American Physicians & Surgeons, the American Society of Internal Medicine, Virginia Medical Society and the National Lipid Association.
