After years of clinical practice and research in New Mexico, Minnesota and Washington, Texas native Dr. Michael Vendrell returned to the state of his birth to found Ikonopedia. Dr. Vendrell recognized the challenges to efficiency and accuracy resulting from radiologists having to describe visual findings with words. He fulfilled his vision for a
better method by developing a system to utilize actual images within the reporting process – identifying findings without resorting to language. Additionally, his design visually organizes concepts so that images rather than words can be used in searches.
While the principle behind Ikonopedia is simple, its execution is very complex. Dr. Vendrell’s role in the development process is critical for translating the radiologist’s perspective into instructions and feedback for the software development team. In Dr. Vendrell’s words: “What you see on the screen looks simple, elegantly masking an enormous complexity. Elegance only happens by design, and I am privileged to be guiding an exceptional team in these efforts.”
The son of physician parents, Dr. Vendrell completed his studies at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1976, and went on to do his residency at George Washington University, finishing those studies and becoming certified by the American Board of Radiology in 1980. Dr. Vendrell applied himself to a series of clinical appointments in New Mexico, Minnesota and Washington, developing a focused interest in breast imaging and intervention, as well as special expertise in breast magnetic resonance imaging.
