Michael brings more than 25 years of experience to Safeguard, as an operating executive, a growth capital provider and as an advisor to management teams at various stages of growth. Leveraging his multi-dimensional background, Michael supports Safeguard’s partner companies in navigating through operational and financial challenges and identifying
opportunities to accelerate growth.
Prior to joining Safeguard, Michael was Managing Partner of Penn Valley Group, an operations-oriented management consulting firm which focused on driving revenue, increasing operating efficiencies and productivity, improving profitability, cash flow and liquidity, and enhancing personal/team performance. In addition to strategic direction and partner management, Michael’s primary focus included capital advisory, mergers and acquisitions and financial management advisory services with middle-market clients.
During his tenure at Penn Valley Group, Michael was commissioned to take on various roles including President and CFO of a mid-market B2B video production, live streaming and events management company, which he was instrumental in guiding through a turnaround and eventual recapitalization. In addition, Michael was an active advisory board member of an IT staffing and consulting business where he lead the company’s capital raising initiatives and supported management to refine its strategic direction and business transformation, ultimately resulting in the company’s successful sale to a larger, strategic partner.
Prior to Penn Valley Group, Michael was Vice President of Corporate Development/M&A at Fiberlink, a then $80 million endpoint security software company backed by Technology Crossover Ventures, Goldman Sachs and Edison Ventures.
Michael’s roots are in corporate banking, developing, structuring and managing credit relationships across a diverse set of industries and management teams. At PNC Bank, Michael focused on secured and stretch acquisition financings for companies seeking growth through product line extensions and customer expansions, on structured financings for capital-consuming leasing and mortgage finance companies, and was the lead banker on the syndicated financing for the largest sports and entertainment venue in the region and various other related businesses.
At Comerica Bank (which acquired Progress Bank’s TechBank™ portfolio and personnel), Michael was VP and Manager of senior and subordinated financings for emerging growth technology, medical device and healthcare services companies. With Copelco/American HealthFund, a specialty healthcare finance company, he focused on the provider and ambulatory care provider market segments, utilizing a proprietary software application to predict the collectability of specific third-party payor claims.
Michael is active member of the Association for Corporate Growth and PACT. He earned a B.A. in both Finance and Accounting and a M.S. in Finance from Drexel University, where he also played Division 1 soccer.
