Norman E. Sharpless, also known as Ned, M.D., has been the Head of National Cancer Institute. Norman Sharpless was a Co-Founder of G1 Therapeutics, Inc. and served as its Member of Scientific Advisory Board. He serves as Wellcome Distinguished Professor of Cancer Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also serves as
the Deputy Director of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. He returned to Chapel Hill as a Faculty Member at Lineberger and became Head of The Cancer Center. He served as a Director of G1 Therapeutics, Inc. He authored more than 100 papers and book chapters as well as 10 patents on the molecular biology of cancer and aging. His research lab discovered the beneficial effects of Pharmacological Quiescence (PQ™) with regard to protection from DNA damaging agents. He is on the Scientific Advisory Board of several scientific foundations. He is Deputy Editor of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. Norman Sharpless earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and an oncology fellowship at Dana Farber/Partners Cancer Care in Boston. Norman Sharpless trained in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and hematology and oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, both at Harvard Medical School.
