Nuno likes to help build companies, groups and organizations from the ground up, and to transform good ideas into businesses or initiatives, especially when they are based on cutting-edge knowledge and/or address a critical need.
Nuno was trained as a scientist, primarily by Prof. Cynthia Kenyon at the University of California San Francisco
(UCSF), where he tried to make a contribution to our understanding of how genes and hormones influence aging and lifespan. Since then he has helped start about ten companies and has invested or played major roles in a few of them, namely in the technology transfer, drug development, individualized medicine and healthcare services fields. In doing so he has negotiated and closed business deals and R&D collaborations all over the World, raised many millions of dollars/euros in investments and grants, and played major roles in mergers and acquisitions.
He has also been deeply involved with national associations and academic research institutes trying to connect science with innovation and economic growth. He has authored scientific papers, patents, book chapters and op/ed articles. Currently Nuno teaches graduate students at the MIT Portugal program and advises or sits on the board of various companies and organizations that he believes may help make people's lives better - or at least his.
