Paul Hilal is the founder and CEO of Mantle Ridge LP. He is an expert on value investing and corporate governance, with a history as an engaged or activist investor, as well as a passive value investor.
Mr. Hilal raised $1.2 billion of capital for a campaign to install Hunter Harrison, one of the most accomplished executives in the railroad
industry, as CEO of CSX Corporation. In March 2017, Hilal was named Vice Chairman of CSX.
Prior to forming Mantle Ridge, Mr. Hilal was a senior partner at Pershing Square Capital Management, L.P where he played leading roles in the firm’s successful activist investments in Ceridian, a data processing company, Air Products & Chemicals Inc. and Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. (CP).
Mr. Hilal worked closely with the CP management team to improve the company’s performance and operations and served on the CP board of directors from 2012 until January of 2016, when he retired from Pershing Square.
Prior to joining Pershing Square in 2006, Mr. Hilal founded and served as Managing Partner of Caliber Capital Management, L.P., an information technology-sector focused investment fund, from 2002 to 2005. From 1998 to 2001, he ran the information technology sector investment program at Hilal Capital Management, also as an investment adviser. Before his investing career, Hilal worked as a Principal at Broadview Associates (1992-1997) as a mergers and acquisitions advisor.
