For the last 30 years, Dr. Feinstein has been successful in identifying the signaling components and deciphering the odorant receptor development components of the mammalian olfactory system. Dr. Feinstein has become a world expert in the generation of transgenic animals to study biological processes in vivo. As a postdoctoral research fellow, he
made over a 100 gene-targeted animals and parsed out the mechanism of odorant receptor function in olfactory sensory neurons. These breakthrough concepts that still predominate the field olfactory wiring were published in two back-to-back, 2004 papers in the premier scientific journal, Cell. As a principal investigator at Hunter College, CUNY for nearly a decade, he continues to characterize the role of odorant receptors in these processes as well as the transcriptional regulation of singular gene choice. He is currently one of a few scientists in the world that directly manipulate odorant receptor gene expression in order to understand odorant coding. Dr. Feinstein’s outstanding record of high quality publications in olfaction spans 4 decades. He attended Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and University of Pennsylvania.
