Roman is a co-founder of PhAST. Roman is a professor of engineering at MIT (2005-present) and ETH Zurich (2015-present). Roman pioneered the field of environmental microfluidics, a single-cell imaging-based approach to study the response of microorganisms to chemical and physical stimuli. Roman is a world-renowned expert in microbial biophysics,
has worked with a broad range of organisms to date, and brings original engineering approaches to microbiological problems. In acknowledgment of his seminal work Roman has received major awards, including an NSF CAREER award and a prestigious Investigator award from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Roman has published nearly 100 papers, including more than 20 in Nature, Science, and PNAS. Roman’s vision is that new, creative engineering technology can make a substantial contribution to the global problem of antibiotic resistance.
