Stowell joined the Irvine, California-based Standard Pacific Homes in 1986 as a project manager in the Orange County Division and, in 1993, became vice president of Project Development. In April 1996, he was promoted to president of the Orange County Division, overseeing one of Standard Pacific's defining divisions in which the array of
product grew significantly during his tenure. In September 2002, he was named president of the Southern California Region. In this capacity, he oversaw the homebuilding operations within the Orange County, Inland Empire, San Diego, Los Angeles, Ventura, Bakersfield, and Central Valley divisions. In May 2007, Stowell was named chief operating officer of Standard Pacific Corp and was named president in March 2011. On January 1, 2012, Stowell was named chief executive officer. Nationally recognized as a luxury homebuilder, Standard Pacific Homes caters to the move-up buyer segment with homebuilding operations in 25 of the country's top housing markets. The company has earned a reputation in the homebuilding industry as a leader in providing innovative architectural designs, quality craftsmanship and an excellent customer experience.
On October 5, 2015, Standard Pacific and Ryland Group completed their merger and creation of CalAtlantic Group Inc, with Stowell being named Executive Chairman of the Board.
Prior to joining Standard Pacific Homes, Stowell worked with The Irvine Company, first as manager, Product Development and Market Research where he identified product positioning and market conditions for new master planned communities. Later, as project analyst, he was responsible for negotiating land sales with outside builders.
Beyond his work at Standard Pacific Homes, Stowell is actively involved in the Building Industry Association and has served on the executive committee and the board of directors. He serves on HomeAid America's board of directors and on the advisory boards of the Orange County Management Association and Pretend City Children's Museum.
