Dr. Switzer received his DVM from Texas A and M in 1948 and his PhD from Iowa State University in 1954. He was awarded his Dr h.c. form the University of Vienna in 1979. He was a Professor at the Iowa State University, Veterinary Medical Research Inst., from 1961 through 1974. He later became the Associate Dean for Research at the ISU College of
Veterinary Medicine, 1974-90. In 1990, he became Distinguished Professor emeritus, Iowa State University, as well as an Associate Dean emeritus to the present.
