Bridging the gap between medical practice and basic research I am Dr. Satwant Kumar, a trained physician with a doctorate in Systems Neuroscience from KU Leuven, Belgium. I am the founder of NeuroReef Labs, a company that builds neuro-inspired intelligent systems and deploys them to solve difficult problems in health care and medicine.
My
scientific journey spans different realms, from the prestigious KU Leuven, Belgium to the Center for Perceptual Systems at UT Austin. My doctoral research with Prof. Rufin Vogels at KU Leuven focused on understanding the representation of visual categories in macaques' body patch system and their influence on perceptual behavior and decision-making. In my current research, I employ imaging methodologies to explore the link between neuronal activity and visual perception in behaving primates.
Beyond academia, I've leveraged my interdisciplinary expertise to drive innovation in healthcare technology. I've been instrumental in developing breakthrough AI algorithms, including Prediqt-Cx, the world's first quality-of-life predictive model for cervical cancer patients, and an AI-driven stroke lesion detection system.
I have a passion for astronomy and astrophotography, in addition to being a "Brain Gazer". I established the TARA Observatory in Cherokee, Texas, which is recognized by the Minor Planet Center (MPC code: V63) and the International Astronomical Union (IAU). TARA Observatory contributes astrometry data for Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) and allows me to capture stunning deep-space images.
